A Different Kitchen, a psychedelic endeavour challenging modern society. Emerging from the quiet of the Norfolk countryside, the quintet began making noise - where alt-indie meets post-punk. Inspired by global injustice and a devotion to force a change for the better, A Different Kitchen write music to encourage self-reflection. Humans are not perfect, but we can improve. This is a conversation that needs to be had. The group address current global issues surrounding racial and gender equality, and the value of mental health awareness and wellbeing. Using their platform to influence systematic change is what gives purpose to their music.

Since breaking out of their hometown bubble, the 5-piece continued their journey further north, with shows across Yorkshire and East Midlands under their former name, Sükko, before making a name for themselves in London - whilst never forgetting their Norfolk roots. After using 2022 to write, record and rebrand, the quintet are ready to share a more emotive and personal group of songs under their new name throughout 2023, and what will be an intense expression of vulnerability. A Different Kitchen write music for themselves, uninfluenced by modern trends, just real experiences.

I'm very glad to introduce a new band here, with a sound that is a bit different from the usual genres I feature. The many of you who love alternative and post-punk will be happy to discover this British band whose marks are authenticity and consistency. They are a cohesive group of talented musicians who just started a new journey and are very focused on what's next. Their latest single "I’m Fine I’m Fine" is the first of many singles that are scheduled to be released in 2023 and beyond. It’s definitely a new direction for A Different Kitchen and a sign of things to come! They say: "I'm Fine I'm Fine is a story of a man I used to know. Someone who was always overlooked. An outcast. Someone who needed a friend. We ran into each other not so long ago and he was accompanied by a woman and had dyed his hair jet black. He looked happy. Man I hope he was happy".

A Different Kitchen shares: "We want to use our platform to promote a positive message from our personal experiences and individual vulnerabilities. The last couple of years have been tough for everyone. We must help to build a platform that gives anyone who might be struggling emotionally the confidence to open up and to speak their mind - something we all struggle to do. I truly hope that these new songs can help to bring light to the importance of mental health awareness and wellbeing".

I asked the band to talk about their origins and how they chose the band name and they told me: "We've all been making music individually for as long as we can remember. We all went to the same high school in Norfolk, which is when we first met, but ironically it wasn’t until we went our separate ways to university that we started playing music together. Felix and Eliot initially started writing music together back in 2018, before recruiting the rest of the band a year later to form a 5-piece. We then started playing shows up and down the country under our former name, Sükko, and naturally became very close as a result". They began taking music more seriously only recently as they say: "When we first started making music together, we really didn’t know what we wanted to say, or how we wanted to present ourselves - we were only 18 at the time and had very little 'life experience'. Naturally this meant our song-writing was all a bit sporadic and slightly random, it didn't fit one theme at all. Over the last couple of years, but more specifically the last 6-8 months, we've developed our sound and our song-writing quite significantly. We've started along a new path that feels right and feels cohesive with us as individuals. We had also started to feel as though our older songs were weighing us down slightly, like we wanted to escape them. So it therefore made a lot of sense to start fresh with a clean slate a rename the band 'A Different Kitchen' in January 2023".
