International Indie Music: my favorite January 2022 releases

Enjoy my favorite picks from Indie Music world released in January 2022, in chronological order!

"STORM IN A TEACUP" - Jackie Therrien - New Hampshire, Usa (released Jan 14th)

Jackie Therrien says: "I had been trying to write this song for the longest time, but never knew how to do it. I didn’t know how to say what I wanted to say. I’ve written a billion different songs all trying to say the same thing this one does, but nothing else did it for me or was something I wanted to share. I recorded this live all in one take, adding in the few harmonies later. I haven’t done anything like that since I recorded my first album “Love Letters”.  I wrote this song as if I was having a straightforward conversation with this person, all the things I never said to him, but should have"

"HOMETOWN" ("Moments" EP) - Robin Winther - Stockolm, Sweden (released Oct 1st)

Robin Winther says: "I'm really stoked to release my debut EP "Moments". We recorded this one a little differently. Most songs today are recorded with one instrument at a time, but I decided I wanted to do this old school so we recorded the full band simultaneously in a studio in Stockholm. And we did pretty much no editing just to keep this organic feeling of a live band playing."

"ASKING FOR A FRIEND" - Conversing with Oceans ft. Frank Quarto - New York, Usa (released Jan 14th)

Conversing with Oceans says: "It was inspired by some big questions that started coming up when I returned to therapy. Sent the demo to my best friend Frank for his usual thoughtful feedback. “Yo, mind if I sing on this?” he quickly replied.  He’s never asked me that before. I knew it had hit him hard and he was able to connect with these words.  A short bit in the studio, hanging with the kiddos, and some cat belly rubs later, “Asking for a Friend” was born. Thank you for your incredible voice & work here, brother. Thank you for asking to sing on this. I can’t stop listening to it because you live and embody every word"

"AMELIA" - Nick Cianci - Philadelphia, Usa (released Jan 19th)

Nick Cianci says: "Amelia is about the excitement and innocence of meeting someone new and surrendering your guard and ego to live in the moment!". Nick Cianci never disappoints with his new releases - in this song in particular, I think that the melodies and instruments harmonize perfectly with Nick's voice.

"DEL MAR" - Plant Dad - Baltimore, Usa (released Jan 21th)

Plant Dad says: "Del Mar is a song about falling in love with someone you are not supposed to fall in love with. Hidden by dreamy guitars and joyous synths, Del Nae’s meaning is a little more disappointing and depressing. Lines like in the second verse, “words spoken softly and lines to remind that feelings won’t make it past door. If I’m being honest to live in the real world is too much to ask anymore when I’m you” symbolizes a character longing for something real in his life."

"FLOWERS ON YOUR FLOOR" - Deer Anna - Hamburg, Germany (released Jan 21th)

The Hamburg-based indie artist Deer Anna just released her third single "Flowers On Your Floor". The song is one of the artist’s most personal and emotional songs and deals with the depression of a very important person in her life as well as the helplessness related to it. When Deer Anna started writing "Flowers On Your Floor" she found inspiration in the floral pattern of an old Persian carpet and imagined flowers sprouting out of it, nurtured by all the suffering and all the tears being shed. Together with her producer and her band, Deer Anna spent a few days in a house at the baltic sea isolated from the outside world to record the song. Lyrically, "Flowers On Your Floor" may not be very hopeful and rather sad but it still creates a warm and gentle atmosphere to draw its listeners in.

"MY SONG" - Sandra North - LA, Usa (video released Jan 21th)

With the release of her debut EP "Long Time Coming" in late August last year, Sandra North is now finally releasing her new video for the latest track to be featured off the album, "My Song". In this song the singer speaks of her upbringing in a small town and her longing to find her place in this world. Lyrically it reveals a very personal and intimate story that she hopes to be empowering and inspiring to others. The heart of the message for the listener is to encourage everyone to believe in themselves and go after what makes them happy!
