Get lost in the enchanting harp sounds of Mia Ramer's new single "River"

Mia Ramer is a Swiss singer, harpist, music producer, and creator of unique and immersive musical experiences. At the heart of her performances is the harp, an instrument she uses in a non-conventional manner, employing loops, sound effects, and vocal harmonies to craft an ethereal, angelic, and deeply relaxing sound that transports the listener to another dimension.

Drawing inspiration from nature, her travels, and a fascination with space and the universe, Mia weaves stories from the places she's been, the people she's met along the way, and faraway, imaginary realms. Her style can be described as a fusion of Celtic, folk, and ambient music, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere that transcends genres. The self-produced "River" is Mia's latest single, with more mesmerizing material in the pipeline. Looking to the future, Mia is eager to share new and original creations, venturing into diverse musical genres while continually refining her style.

"River" begins with lovely harp chords that instantly convey calm and enchantment, followed by Mia's evocative vocals that seems to echo through the trees. The music then evolves in a rhythmic sound, with the use of captivating percussions and instrumentals, that recall distant tribal sounds in the forest. Mia's ability to create a magic and fabulous atmosphere is impressive, I literally had goosepumps while listening to her music. An image came to my mind: the memory of those wonderful ornamental statuettes which represented little fairies playing the lyre on a flower or a mushroom, that I used to collect when I was a little girl. That's how I imagine Mia Ramer: a little fairy illuminated by shy rays of the sun in a shady forest, playing the harp on the bank of the river.

Mia Ramer shares: "This is a song that came about at a time when there was a lot of unknown in my life. I had to separate myself from relationships that I was very attached to but were not good for me, making room for something different and better for me in the long run. It’s about letting go of things that no longer serve you and moving on to something bigger. It can be a scary feeling but it’s a necessary part of life and a part of growing and becoming a wiser and stronger person. The river is a metaphor for the ebbs and flows of life and its unpredictability, but its currents always pull you towards where you need to go, if you listen to your intuition and are ready to step into the unknown".

About the inspiration, Mia says: "I came up with the main chord progression back last year when I was in Canada. I often do jamming sessions with my looper and my harp and sometimes I record what I come up with when I feel like I’ve got a good idea. I don’t always make something out of those recordings, but every once in a while I listen back and use some of that material to create a song, if whatever I made still inspires me. I would probably have forgotten about that idea if I had not recorded it. On another jamming session several weeks later I listened back and from there on I got into a flow state and the song kind of wrote itself. It was an instant success on Twitch, it kept being requested on my live streams so I felt like I was on to something". Adapting to the challenges of pandemic, she has indeed cultivated a dedicated following on Twitch, live-streaming her music to a growing international audience, connecting with hundreds of listeners each week. This virtual platform has become a creative haven, motivating her to continue crafting new songs and exploring the limitless versatility of the harp.

"I’ve been on a music production journey for a little over a year now and try to be as self sufficient as possible with my music" she shares, "Some of my Twitch viewers were begging me to record that song and produce it so I did it. It was a lot of work and I really wanted to do the song justice in my production. I had to learn new things, the song has a time signature change and different effects I had to automate, which is not something I was familiar with. It’s probably very basic for more experienced producers, but it was a big deal for me to figure this out by myself as a new producer, and it’s little wins like this that keep me going".

She reached out to Eliott Glinn for mixing and mastering, not a new face on Laura Meets Musicians as I had the opportunity to feature him in my "Behind the Music" series. Mia says. "I had worked with him in the past on other songs and he always did a fantastic job. This time I had learned a few things since the last song I had produced and I was a lot clearer on what I wanted the song to sound like. I’m very happy with the result; it is quite experimental, and maybe in the future I’ll keep my productions a bit more simple but I feel like that was what suited the song best. I’m very excited to share it with the world, I think this is probably the most creative I’ve been in my productions so far. I’m very grateful for my Twitch audience for being so supportive and caring so much about my music. If it wasn’t for that community I would probably have given up on making music full time because it is such a rough industry to be in, but sharing my music with my wonderful friends on Twitch makes it all worth it".

Mia's musical journey has taken her across Europe, with performances in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, France, and Sweden, and captivating audiences across Canada. Her diverse discography, featuring various albums and singles on Spotify, reflects the depth and versatility of her solo project and collaborative ventures. Thank you Mia for sharing your wonderful music and the BTS with us!
